It historically includes the municipalities of Negrar, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano, Fumane and Sant’Ambrogio.

During the Roman era, Valpolicella was a favorite holiday destination for noble families, attracted by the mild and temperate climate and its proximity to Verona. Vines were grown there, from which the famous “Acinatico” wine was produced.

The first documents regarding the existence of a castle in the Valle Provinianensis, between the district of San Giorgio and the valley of Marano, date back to the 11th century. It is the castle of Monteclo, built on a hill in the 10th century.

Land of flavours and cultures

In addition to wine and cherries, Valpolicella is also home to artistic works, especially in the architectural field. The proliferation of art in Valpolicella has been helped by the favorable political and economic conditions that have always distinguished the “County” compared to, for example, the much harsher and poorer Lessinia. The proximity to the city has meant that the best local painters, sculptors and architects have been invited to express their creativity in these places too.

The patrician residences of the 16th and 19th centuries are the most attractive historical monuments, shaped primarily by the influence of the great architect Michele Sanmicheli, whose influence gave a positive boost to architectural art.

The churches and villas in Valpolicella are accompanied by a vast artistic repertoire of popular and rural architecture: courtyards, districts, dovecote towers, vaults, fountains, wash houses in rough local stone and the inevitable dry stone walls (called marogne ) that shape the terraced landscape of the place.
